My Minimal Set of AI Tools for a Practicing Designer

Vladimir Vyborny shares his experience using AI tools that assist him in daily design work and in creating formspace.design, enhancing creativity and efficiency.

In the world of landscape design, where creativity meets precision, technology has always played a key role. But over the past few years, artificial intelligence has brought about a true revolution, becoming an indispensable assistant for me, Vladimir Vyborny. My journey in landscape design began long ago, back in 1997, and at 61, I started learning to code with the help of AI to create formspace.design. This experience convinced me: AI is not a replacement, but a powerful complement to human talent and expertise.

Why AI has become an indispensable assistant in my work

My career in landscape design, which began at "Dom i Sad" (House and Garden) back in 2000, taught me to value efficiency and a deep understanding of client needs. For a long time, I used traditional tools like AutoCAD and Revit, but I always looked for ways to speed up processes and make them more intuitive. When I started developing formspace.design myself, I realized how much AI could transform a designer's daily work.

For me, AI is not just a set of programs, but a kind of "colleague" who takes on routine tasks, freeing me for what's most important – creativity and communication with the client. It helps me generate ideas faster, analyze data, and even write texts, saving not hours, but entire days of work. I've learned to use AI to multiply my capabilities without losing my unique authorial style.

My basic set of AI tools

My minimal set of AI tools isn't vast, but each performs its unique function, significantly accelerating and improving my work.

  • Idea and Mood Board Generation. For the initial stage, when I need to quickly grasp a style, color palette, or overall concept, I actively use generative AI systems. They allow me to create dozens of visual references in minutes, which previously had to be collected manually from libraries and magazines. This helps both me and the client quickly arrive at a shared vision, for example, for a plot of 10-15 sotkas (approx. 0.25-0.37 acres), where it's important to define the overall style immediately.
  • Text Assistants. For drafting commercial proposals, project descriptions, or even blog posts, I turn to large language models. They help me structure my thoughts, improve phrasing, and check text for logical flow. This is especially valuable when I need to quickly prepare informational materials. I've already discussed how I use AI for writing texts in the article How AI helps me write texts for formspace.design while staying myself.
  • Analysis and Planning Tools. This is where formspace.design, which I am developing, comes to the rescue. The AI within it analyzes input data – photos of the plot, client wishes – and suggests optimal zoning options and object placement, considering terrain features and insolation. This helps avoid typical mistakes, such as incorrect placement of a gazebo or excessively narrow pathways (e.g., less than 1.2 meters for the main path).
  • Visualization and Rendering. Although I use professional 3D editors, AI tools significantly speed up the process of creating photorealistic images. Some allow quickly applying different styles to existing renders or even transforming ordinary plot photos into conceptual sketches with new elements.

How AI helps optimize workflows

The most significant thing AI has brought to my work is tremendous time savings and improved quality in the early stages of a project. What used to take days can now be done in hours. For example, creating 5-10 different landscape concepts for a plot of 8-12 sotkas (approx. 0.2-0.3 acres) manually is a week's work. With AI, I can get the first drafts in half a day. This allows me to offer clients more options and find the optimal solution faster.

The number of revisions is also reduced. When a client sees diverse but already well-thought-out concepts at the start, it's easier for them to make a decision, which significantly reduces the volume of edits in subsequent stages. This is especially important for complex projects where each stage requires approval. AI also improves communication: AI-generated visual concepts are much clearer for non-specialists than drawings or diagrams.

Beginner mistakes when implementing AI

Like any powerful tool, AI requires a thoughtful approach. Here are a few mistakes I often see beginners make and try to avoid myself:

  1. Blind trust in AI output. AI is a tool, not the ultimate designer. Its suggestions must always be checked through the lens of your experience and knowledge. For example, AI might propose a beautiful solution that could be impractical or too expensive to implement. That's why I, with my 25 years of experience in landscape design, always adjust and refine AI ideas.
  2. Ignoring the "human touch." Design is an art. AI can be technically perfect, but without an author's perspective, without considering the emotional component, a project can turn out soulless. It's important to maintain your individuality and infuse a part of yourself into every project.
  3. Over-reliance on a single tool. No single AI tool is universal. It's better to use a set of several programs, each strong in its own area. This provides flexibility and allows choosing the best solution for a specific task.
  4. Misunderstanding AI limitations. AI works with the data it was trained on. If there's little or poor-quality data for a specific task, the result will be accordingly. It's important to know where AI is strong and where its capabilities are limited.
  5. Lack of verification and editing. Always double-check and edit what AI produces. This applies to both texts and images. Small adjustments are often needed to ensure the result meets your standards and goals.

How to plan a landscape with AI in formspace.design

My main goal in creating formspace.design was to give landscape designers and plot owners a tool that would simplify and accelerate the planning process as much as possible. As a practitioner myself, I know what's missing in existing solutions. formspace.design is the answer to these needs, combining my many years of experience and the capabilities of artificial intelligence.

Imagine you have a plot, say, 6 sotkas (approximately 20x30 meters or 65x98 feet), and you want to quickly see several options for its transformation. In formspace.design, you can use Module 2.1 "AI Concept". You simply upload photos of your plot, specify your main wishes – for example, a barbecue area, a children's playground, a pond – and within minutes, AI generates several concepts for you. It considers existing structures, terrain, insolation, and suggests optimal zoning. This allows you to get visual drafts in just 15-20 minutes, which previously would have required a day or two of a designer's work. AI doesn't just draw pictures; it offers well-thought-out solutions based on the principles of landscape design that I've embedded in the algorithms.

Once you've chosen a basic concept, you can move to Module 1.x "Plan/Zones/Objects" for more detailed refinement. Here, you can precisely place objects: for example, a 3x4 meter gazebo, 1.2 meter wide paths, flower beds, and trees. You can see how these elements will interact with each other, check distances, and ensure all functional zones are conveniently connected. There's also Module 3.1 "Design by Photo", which allows you to quickly make changes directly on photos of the plot, which is very convenient for client presentations and for quickly finalizing the last touches. This is a living tool that evolves with my experience and user feedback.

My vision for the future of AI in design

I am convinced that AI will not replace designers but will make their work deeper, more interesting, and more effective. The designer's role transforms: from an executor of routine tasks to a curator, strategist, and inspirer. We no longer need to spend hours on mechanical drafting or searching for references – AI takes care of that. We can focus on empathy, understanding client psychology, and creating unique, emotionally rich spaces. It's important to constantly learn and adapt, as technology is developing by leaps and bounds. My approach to formspace.design reflects this philosophy: AI should assist people, not design for them. I wrote more about this in the article Why I decided that AI should help the designer, not design for them.

FAQ

Will AI replace a landscape designer?

No, AI will not replace a landscape designer, but it will significantly change the profession. AI will take on routine and repetitive tasks, such as initial idea generation, mood board creation, and basic zoning. The designer will retain the role of a creative director, strategist, and psychologist, interpreting client wishes and bringing a unique "human" vision and experience to the project.

What skills are important for a designer in the AI era?

In the AI era, critical thinking, the ability to formulate prompts for AI, and the capacity to verify and refine AI-generated solutions become critically important for designers. Empathy, developed artistic taste, deep knowledge in dendrology, soil science, and building codes also remain indispensable. Furthermore, it's important to constantly learn and be open to new technologies.

How long does it take to master AI tools?

Basic mastery of most AI tools for design takes from a few hours to several days, depending on the program's complexity and your previous experience. However, to become a true expert and learn to effectively integrate AI into your workflows, continuous practice and experimentation are required. I myself, having started coding with AI at 61, am still learning and discovering new possibilities.

Can AI-generated ideas be fully trusted?

AI-generated ideas should not be fully trusted. AI is a powerful assistant, but it lacks the intuition, experience, and full contextual understanding that a human possesses. Its suggestions must always be checked for practicality, budget compliance, standards, and client taste. AI might propose a beautiful but non-functional solution, for example, placing a recreation area in a drafty spot or plants that won't thrive in a given climate.

How does AI help with project budgeting?

AI can help with budgeting by suggesting design options that consider specified financial constraints. For example, it can propose more economical materials or plants that fit the overall concept but cost less. Also, by accelerating concept generation, AI reduces design time, which directly impacts the cost of design services.

Which AI tools are best for beginners?

For beginners, I would recommend starting with simple and intuitive AI image generation tools, such as Midjourney or Stable Diffusion (with user-friendly interfaces). For text tasks, ChatGPT or Gemini are suitable. And for landscape design, of course, formspace.design – it's specifically created to make entering the world of AI-powered design as easy as possible, without requiring deep technical knowledge.

What is the main advantage of formspace.design compared to other AI tools?

The main advantage of formspace.design is that it was developed by a landscape designer for landscape designers and plot owners. It's not just an image generator but a tool that considers industry specifics: zoning, insolation, agro-technical requirements, and terrain features. It integrates my many years of practical experience into its algorithms, offering not just beautiful but also functional, implementable solutions, which distinguishes it from universal AI tools.

Implementing AI into my daily work is not just a nod to trends but a conscious step towards increasing efficiency and quality. I believe that every designer can and should master these tools to remain competitive and continue to grow. Start experimenting, and you'll see how AI becomes your reliable partner in creativity.
