Why I Decided AI Should Assist Designers, Not Replace Them

Vladimir Vyborny, founder of formspace.design, shares his journey to understanding that AI should be a powerful assistant, not an autonomous artist, in landscape design.

My journey in landscape design and business has taught me one important thing: the best solutions are born at the intersection of deep task understanding, creative approach, and effective tools. This is why I am convinced that artificial intelligence in design should act as a powerful assistant, expanding human capabilities rather than replacing them. AI can significantly accelerate routine processes, offer numerous options, and help visualize ideas, but the final say, intuition, and the 'artist's eye' always remain with the human.

My Path to Understanding the Role of AI

Throughout my life, I have been at the intersection of creativity and a systematic approach. On one hand, painting, participating in exhibitions in my youth, the 'artist's eye' that sees not just an object but its place in composition, light, shadows, and mood. On the other hand – an education in business economics, management experience in the 90s, where I set tasks for programmers on management accounting at NPF 'Alkar', and then led the company 'Dom i Sad' (House and Garden), which specialized in designing and building cottages and landscaping plots. This dual experience taught me to value both creativity and efficiency.

In my work as a landscape designer, I used AutoCAD, then switched to Revit and 3ds Max. These tools offered freedom but demanded enormous time investment. I saw how many hours were spent on routine tasks that were, in essence, mechanical. When, at 61, I began learning coding with the help of AI and independently developing formspace.design, I gained a unique opportunity to create precisely such a tool that would combine my design experience and understanding of business processes with new technologies.

Why Full Design Automation is a Dead End

The idea that AI will simply 'draw' a design for you sounds appealing, but in practice, it leads to mediocre results. Landscape design is not just a collection of elements on a plot. It's a complex system that considers unique site features (slope, lighting, soil composition), climatic conditions, the family's lifestyle and aesthetic preferences, their budget, and future plans. AI, left to its own devices, cannot fully account for these nuances. It can generate beautiful images, but they will often be detached from reality, non-functional, or not aligned with the client's deep-seated needs.

For example, AI might suggest a luxurious rose garden but fail to consider that the plot is in a shady spot with high groundwater levels, or that the owner has a pollen allergy. It might draw an ideal pathway but ignore that children love to play soccer precisely there, or that the dog has its own established route. My experience shows that design is always a dialogue, a search for compromises, and a deep dive into context. Without this, design becomes a meaningless collection of shapes and colors.

AI as an Amplifier of Human Experience

I see AI not as a replacement, but as a powerful amplifier. Imagine being able to get 3-4 sketch options for a 10-20-are plot in a matter of minutes, instead of spending a whole day on it. This frees up time for what's most valuable – client communication, creative exploration, and refining details that make a project truly unique. AI can handle the generation of basic layout solutions, placement of typical elements, and selection of plants based on specified parameters (e.g., frost resistance, flowering during a certain period). This allows the designer to focus on the concept, style, atmosphere, and fine-tuning that requires human intuition and experience.

This approach resonates with my past experience at 'Alkar', where we automated management accounting. The essence was not to eliminate the accountant, but to provide them with a tool that would free them from routine tasks and allow them to focus on analysis and strategic decision-making. I further developed similar thoughts on the value of automation for increasing efficiency, rather than replacing humans, in the article 'The Mistake I Almost Made in CRM by Relying Solely on AI'.

Site Context and Client Needs — The Foundation

Before AI can 'draw' anything, a human must provide it with the correct context. This includes: clear zoning of the plot (where the recreation area will be, and where the garden), defining functional requirements (is a pool needed, a children's playground, a barbecue area), understanding the style (modern, classical, natural), and, of course, budget constraints. Without this input, AI will generate random images that have no real value.

My many years of experience at 'Dom i Sad' taught me that a successful project begins with deep analysis. First, we visited the site, studied the terrain, existing plantings, and insolation. Then we talked with the client, finding out their dreams, habits, even family composition and the presence of pets. Only after this was the technical specification formed, which became the basis of the project. AI cannot conduct this research for you, but it can become an invaluable tool for quickly translating this data into visual concepts.

The Synthesis of Creativity and Technology

The best projects are born at the intersection of human creativity and technological capabilities. AI can be incredibly useful for generating numerous ideas that the designer can then refine, adapt, and personalize. It allows for quick hypothesis testing, trying unconventional combinations, and evaluating how a particular element will look from different angles. This significantly reduces experimentation time and helps avoid a common mistake: 'first we did X – then we redid it,' when incompatibilities or functional shortcomings are discovered in later stages.

AI enables designers to be more productive, freeing them from routine and allowing them to spend more time on truly important things – creating a unique atmosphere, selecting unique plants, and refining details that make a project special. This synthesis of ideas and technologies is what I constantly consider when developing formspace.design. I discussed in more detail how my business experience shapes the product's architecture in the article 'How My 90s Business Consultant Experience Shapes the Logic of formspace.design Modules'.

How formspace.design Implements the 'AI Assistant' Principle

At formspace.design, I embody the idea of AI as a tool that complements and enhances the designer, rather than competing with them. The platform's modules are built to automate routine tasks as much as possible, while providing full control over the creative process. For example, Module 1.x 'Plan/Zones/Objects' allows the user to clearly define plot boundaries, divide it into functional zones, and place key objects such as a house, garage, or gazebo. This is precisely the 'context preparation' that a human must perform.

Then Module 2.1 'AI Concept' comes into play. Based on the defined zones, objects, and your style preferences, AI generates several diverse planning concepts. For example, you can specify that you want a modern garden with a pond and a barbecue area on a 15-are plot. AI will offer 3-4 options, each with its own logic and arrangement of elements. Your task as a designer is to choose the most suitable one, refine it, add specific details using the object library from Module 1.x, or quickly visualize the idea with Module 3.1 'Design by Photo' to show the client how it will look on their actual site. This reduces the time spent on creating sketches by 30-40% and allows for presenting more refined and diverse options to the client.

FAQ

Will AI replace landscape designers in the future?

No, I am confident that AI will not replace landscape designers, but rather transform their role. It will take on routine and technical tasks, freeing designers for more creative, strategic, and communicative work. Designers who learn to effectively use AI will become more competitive and productive.

What is the main advantage of AI for an experienced designer?

The main advantage of AI for an experienced designer is speed and the ability to explore significantly more options in a short amount of time. AI allows for rapid concept generation, idea visualization, and making changes, which previously required hours or even days of manual labor. This enables the designer to focus on the quality and uniqueness of the project.

How can AI help when working with demanding clients?

With demanding clients, AI becomes an indispensable tool for rapid iteration. You can instantly show several different concepts, make changes 'on the fly' right during a meeting, and thereby quickly find a solution that fully satisfies the client. This reduces the number of revisions and increases client satisfaction.

What skills become more important for a designer in the age of AI?

In the age of AI, critical thinking skills, the ability to formulate precise prompts (prompt engineering), a deep understanding of client needs, and, of course, a developed artistic vision become more important for a designer. The ability to integrate AI into one's workflow to maximize its potential as an assistant is also crucial.

Can AI be fully trusted with plant or material selection?

AI cannot yet be fully trusted with plant or material selection. AI can suggest options based on given parameters, but it does not possess complete knowledge of local conditions, ecological nuances, or the specific properties of materials in a real environment. Human experience and knowledge of local flora, climate, and material durability remain critically important.

How did I, Vladimir Vyborny, come up with the idea of an AI assistant in formspace.design?

My idea for an AI assistant was born from personal pain and many years of experience. Working at 'Dom i Sad', I constantly encountered a lack of effective tools that would save time on routine tasks and allow more focus on creativity. My background in business and automation, as well as my passion for painting, suggested that AI is not a magician, but a very smart and fast executor who needs human guidance and context.

What are the risks associated with excessive reliance on AI in design?

Excessive reliance on AI can lead to a loss of originality and the emergence of generic, 'soulless' designs. There is also a risk of errors if AI does not receive sufficiently accurate input data or is not controlled by a human who understands the real conditions of the site. It is important to maintain a critical approach and use AI as a tool, not as the sole 'creator'.

How does formspace.design help me grow as a designer?

formspace.design, which I am creating, allows me not only to optimize my work but also to continuously grow. It frees me from monotonous tasks, giving me more time to study new trends, experiment with unusual ideas, and improve my skills. This provides an opportunity to stay abreast of innovations and apply them in practice, constantly improving my projects.
