How My 90s Business Consultant Experience Shapes the Logic of formspace.design Modules

My journey from a 90s business consultant to creating formspace.design. Discover how a systematic approach and management accounting lessons formed the foundation of this landscape planner.

My experience as a business consultant in the 90s, helping companies build management systems and write business plans, became the foundation for creating formspace.design. It was then that I realized the critical importance of a systematic approach, clear logic, and a deep understanding of the interconnections between processes. These principles, developed during a period of rapid market formation, now underpin every module of formspace.design, ensuring logical, consistent, and effective work with landscape design projects.

The Roots of a Systematic Approach: 90s Consulting

In the early 90s, after teaching at DGIFK, I delved into the world of business. My work at NPF 'Alkar' and later 'Alkar-Invest' involved setting tasks for programmers to create management accounting systems and developing investment programs. We built business plans that demanded rock-solid logic, predictability, and control at every stage. This was a time when every mistake was costly, and success depended on the ability to see the big picture, break it down into manageable blocks, and control execution. I learned not just to solve problems, but to create systems that prevent them from arising. For example, when we launched the production of concrete products for landscaping, we calculated all stages in advance – from raw material procurement to logistics and installation. This experience became my first school for designing complex systems.

Lessons in Management Accounting and Automation

Working with management accounting taught me to value data. I saw how the lack of accurate information or its misinterpretation led to losses and incorrect strategic decisions. My task was not just to collect numbers, but to build a logical chain that would allow a business owner to see the real state of affairs in 5 minutes, not a week. Setting tasks for programmers to automate these processes required a deep understanding of business logic and the ability to translate it into a language understandable by a machine. It was then that I realized a good tool is one that reflects the real world of business, its processes, and needs, rather than imposing its abstract schemes. I constantly applied these lessons when, at 'Dom i Sad' company, we worked on landscaping projects for plots ranging from 6 to 20+ sotok, facing the need to manage numerous resources, materials, and specialists.

Why Landscape Needs Its Own CRM

My many years of experience in the landscape business at 'Dom i Sad' company showed that standard CRM systems, designed for general business processes, often do not account for the specifics of landscape design. They do not allow for effective management of design stages, material budgeting (plants, stone, soil), work with contractors, and, most importantly, client visualization. I repeatedly encountered situations where ready-made Western CRMs were unsuitable for the landscape business. I wrote in detail about this in the article Why ready-made Western CRMs are not suitable for the CIS landscape business. I had to spend an enormous amount of time on adaptation, which still didn't yield the desired result. This pain – the lack of an adequate tool that understood the logic of a landscape project from concept to implementation – became a powerful impetus for creating formspace.design.

The Three Pillars of formspace.design: Modularity, Logic, Results

Everything I learned about systematic approach and project management in the 90s, I tried to embody in formspace.design. Our modules are built on the principle of 'three pillars': modularity, logic, and results. Modularity allows you to work with a project step-by-step, from general zoning to detailing specific objects. Logic ensures a sequence of actions, preventing typical errors, such as planting first and then remembering the irrigation system. And the result is not just a beautiful render, but a feasible project where all calculations and plans are interconnected and data-backed. It's like building a business plan: each section influences the others, and the final estimate is not just a number, but the sum of all interconnected decisions.

From Business Plan to Plot Project: Stages and Interconnections

In landscape design, I see many parallels with developing business plans. Every plot, whether 10 or 15 sotok, is a separate project with its own goals, resources, and limitations. Just as in a business plan we start with market analysis and goal setting, in landscape design we begin with site analysis, client needs, and functional zoning. This is followed by concept development, element detailing, budgeting, work planning, and finally, implementation. In formspace.design, I aimed to create a tool that guides the user through all these stages logically and transparently. For example, if you plan a path 1.2 meters wide, the system will help account for its connection to adjacent recreation areas or flowerbeds, rather than just drawing a line. This helps avoid costly rework when, for instance, after paving, it turns out there isn't enough space for comfortable passage or garden furniture installation.

AI as an Extension of Systems Thinking

Artificial intelligence in formspace.design is not just a trendy feature, but a logical evolution of the idea of automation and a systematic approach. AI allows processing vast amounts of data, generating ideas based on given parameters, and quickly adapting to changes. It's like an experienced consultant who instantly analyzes input data and proposes optimal solutions. In my business consulting practice, I often faced the need to quickly calculate multiple scenarios; AI does this in seconds. It helps me take this experience to a new level, offering formspace.design users not just a drawing tool, but an intelligent design assistant. I discussed more about how to use AI in landscape design in the article Prompt Engineering for a Landscape Designer: Where to Start?.

Preventing Errors at the Planning Stage

The main goal of a systematic approach is to minimize errors and risks. In landscape design, this is especially important, as rework during the construction phase is very costly. Imagine: you've already bought and brought 20 tons of fertile soil, and then it turns out that the plot's slope doesn't allow for proper drainage, and everything needs to be redone. Unfortunately, such a scenario is not uncommon. formspace.design modules are designed so that you can 'play through' the entire project virtually, identify potential problems at the planning stage, and avoid them in reality. This applies to everything: from the house's orientation relative to cardinal directions to the optimal placement of utilities and the selection of plants suitable for specific soil and climate.

How to Plan in formspace.design

My experience in business and landscape design has taught me to value a step-by-step, logical approach, and this is exactly how formspace.design is structured. When you start a project, for example, for a 12-sotok plot, I recommend using modules 1.x to define key zones and objects. First, module 1.1 'Plot Zoning' will help you determine functional areas such as a recreation area, playground, vegetable garden, or main entrance, based on an analysis of insolation, terrain, and existing structures. Then, using module 1.2 'Objects on the Plot', you place the main elements: house, garage, gazebo, paths, considering their interconnections and ergonomics. This stage helps create a strong skeleton for the future project, even before you start thinking about details.

Once zoning and main objects are defined, you can move on to more creative iterations. For example, module 2.1 'AI Concept' allows you to upload your plot plan and describe the desired style and functions to receive several design solution options. AI generation can suggest interesting ideas for the placement of flowerbeds, ponds, or pergolas, which you can then refine and detail in modules 1.3–1.7. If you have photos of the existing plot, module 3.1 'Design by Photo' will help quickly visualize how the proposed changes will look. This approach allows you to repeatedly check and correct ideas before moving on to the material procurement or construction phases, minimizing risks and ensuring that the final result will meet your expectations and budget.

FAQ

Why is 90s business experience so important for a modern landscape tool?

The experience of the 90s taught me to build systems from scratch in conditions of uncertainty, where every detail mattered. This developed the ability for systems thinking, understanding interconnections, and forecasting. These skills are critically important for creating a tool that helps structure the complex process of landscape design, transforming it into a sequential and manageable project.

How does formspace.design help avoid typical errors in landscape design?

formspace.design prevents errors thanks to its modular structure and logical sequence. For example, it won't let you forget about drainage before planting or utilities before laying paths. The system encourages the user to work through each stage, identifying potential problems at a virtual level before they turn into costly reworks on the plot.

Is formspace.design suitable only for complex projects or also for small plots?

formspace.design is universal. Its modular structure allows for equally effective work with large-scale projects covering tens of sotok, as well as small backyard areas. For small plots, it helps maximize every square meter, and for larger ones, it helps intelligently zone space and manage complex systems.

What is the most valuable lesson from the 90s applied in formspace.design?

The most valuable lesson is the importance of data accuracy and a systematic approach to management. In the 90s, I saw how an incorrect figure in a business plan could lead to collapse. In landscape design, this means that precise planning of dimensions, materials, and budgets, as well as understanding the logic of each step, guarantees project success and client satisfaction.

Can existing data or drawings be integrated into formspace.design?

Yes, formspace.design is designed with the ability to import source data. You can upload plot plans, photos, and other information to use them as a basis for design. This allows you to integrate existing work and not start a project from scratch, saving time and resources.

How does formspace.design differ from ordinary CAD programs for landscape?

Unlike traditional CAD programs (such as AutoCAD or Revit, which I used for many years), formspace.design is not just a drawing tool, but an intelligent planning system. It not only allows you to draw but also helps make design decisions, generate concepts using AI, and manage the project at all stages, offering ready-made solutions and preventing errors, rather than just recording them on a drawing.

Do you need to be tech-savvy to use formspace.design?

No, formspace.design is created with an emphasis on an intuitive interface. My goal was to make the tool accessible to a wide range of users, not just professional programmers or designers. The logic of the modules guides the user step-by-step, explaining what needs to be done and why, minimizing the need for deep technical knowledge.

Will formspace.design replace the work of a landscape designer?

formspace.design does not replace the creativity and experience of a landscape designer but enhances them. It is a powerful assistant that automates routine tasks, suggests new ideas through AI, and structures the process. The designer gains more time for creativity and strategic thinking, as well as a more accurate and substantiated tool for client interaction.

My journey from business consultant to founder of formspace.design is a story of how profound lessons from the past can become the foundation for innovation. I believe that the systematic approach I've honed for decades will help you create not just beautiful, but truly well-thought-out and implementable landscape projects. Try formspace.design and see for yourself how logic and structure can transform your approach to plot design.
