Plot Visualization: Before and After formspace.design
Discover how formspace.design revolutionizes landscape design, enabling quick creation of realistic visualizations and efficient client collaboration, bypassing manual complexities.
In my many years of practice as a landscape designer, from 1997 until the creation of formspace.design, I have witnessed how much the process of plot visualization has evolved. From manual sketches and watercolors to complex 3D models in AutoCAD, Revit, and 3ds Max – each stage brought new opportunities, but also new difficulties. Today, thanks to advancements in artificial intelligence, we are on the verge of a revolution that makes complex visualization accessible to every plot owner, and this is precisely the problem I am solving with formspace.design.
My Experience: How We Used to Work
When I first started in landscape design with the company "Dom i Sad" (House and Garden), our tools were quite limited. The first projects were literally done "on the knee": manual sketches, watercolor drawings, collages from magazines. This required not only artistic skills but also an enormous amount of time. The client received a general idea, but details often remained to their imagination. We had to explain a lot, draw more during meetings, and there was still room for misunderstanding.
Then came the era of CAD systems. First, I mastered AutoCAD, then moved to Revit for comprehensive design of cottages and plots, and used 3ds Max for realistic images. This was a huge step forward. We could create precise plans, sections, even virtual walkthroughs. However, this process was incredibly labor-intensive and required specific knowledge. To get one high-quality render, it took up to 8-12 hours for modeling and scene setup. And considering that a project for a 10-15 acre plot usually required several angles and possibly seasonal variations, the amount of work increased manifold. Licenses for professional software cost thousands of dollars, and training took months. I remember how we could spend up to 5-7 iterations of revisions on one project, each of which delayed deadlines and increased costs for the client.
Challenges of Traditional Visualization
The main challenge was balancing quality, speed, and cost. For small private plots (say, 6-12 acres), full 3D visualization often proved too expensive, and therefore inaccessible. Clients wanted to see what they were paying for, but didn't want to overpay for the visualization process itself.
Another problem was communication. Even the most detailed drawings and realistic renders did not always convey the atmosphere and feeling. A client might say, "I like it, but something isn't quite right." And that "something isn't quite right" could mean completely different things – from the shade of paving stones to the shape of a shrub. Changes to the project required redoing the entire 3D model, which was extremely inefficient. This led to delays, additional costs, and, most unpleasantly, a loss of trust if the client didn't see quick results.
Advantages of the Digital Approach
Digital tools, even before the advent of AI, had already significantly simplified many aspects. They allowed for the automation of routine tasks, increased calculation accuracy, and improved detail. But the true breakthrough occurred with the emergence of accessible AI technologies. They significantly reduce the time from idea to finished visualization. Now, you don't need to be an expert in 3D modeling or have expensive software.
I am convinced that any plot owner, even without a design education, should be able to see their future garden before the first spade is even put into the ground. This not only saves time and money but also helps avoid typical mistakes where something is done first and then redone because "it doesn't look the same in real life." I discussed such mistakes in more detail in the article "Typical Contractor Mistake: Not Calculating the Real Cost of an Hour's Work".
A Revolution in Client Understanding
When I developed formspace.design, my goal was not just to automate the process, but to change the very dynamic of client interaction. Previously, the designer acted as a kind of "translator" of the client's idea into the language of drawings and visualizations. Now, the client can be an active participant in this process from the very beginning.
The ability to instantly generate various concepts, change materials, colors, object placement, and immediately see the result on screen – this changes everything. The client doesn't just approve a finished project; they participate in its creation, seeing their ideas come to life. This significantly increases their satisfaction and reduces the number of revisions, which can take up to 20-30% of the total project time. Moreover, it allows for early detection and elimination of potential shortcomings, such as overly narrow 80 cm passages or incorrectly placed recreation areas, which would be very expensive to redo later.
Common Mistakes in Visualization Work
Even with modern tools, mistakes can be made. Here are some that I observed and tried to account for when creating formspace.design:
- Excessive detail in early stages: There's no need to immediately draw every leaf. Start with zoning and large elements. Detail should come gradually, as general concepts are approved.
- Ignoring real conditions: Visualization must take into account topography, existing structures, and lighting. AI doesn't know about soil, water, and climate, as I wrote in the article "What AI Doesn't Know About Soil, Water, and Climate and Why It's Critical". Always cross-reference with reality.
- Too many options: Offering a client dozens of almost identical options will only confuse them. Better to provide 2-3 clearly distinct concepts that can then be refined.
- Lack of feedback: Visualization is a tool for dialogue. If the client is not involved, it loses its value.
Criteria for Effective Visualization
Effective visualization should be:
- Clear: Easily readable for someone without specialized training.
- Realistic: Convey materials, textures, and lighting as plausibly as possible. This doesn't mean cinematic photo-realism, but a sufficient degree of authenticity.
- Flexible: Allow for quick changes and generation of new options.
- Informative: Contain enough detail to understand the scope of work and the elements used.
- Economical: Not require excessive time and resources for creation.
How to Plan and Visualize with formspace.design
My goal in creating formspace.design was to make the planning and visualization process as intuitive and accessible as possible. I wanted even someone who had never worked with landscape design to be able to easily realize their ideas and get a realistic result. This became possible thanks to a combination of my experience and modern AI technologies, which I began to master by coding at 61. You can read about how I quickly assembled prototypes in the article "How I Assembled a Prototype in One Week That Would Have Taken Months Before".
Imagine you have a photo of your plot or a schematic plan. You upload it to formspace.design. Using module 1.x "Plan, Zones, Objects," you can quickly outline the plot boundaries, mark existing structures, and define the zones you want to create – for example, a recreation area, a playground, a vegetable garden. Then, using module 2.1 "AI Concept," you can enter your wishes (e.g., "modern garden with minimalist design and a pond") and receive several unique concepts generated by AI, directly based on your photo or plan. And if you want to see how it will look in reality, module 3.1 "Design from Photo" will allow you to overlay the chosen concept onto a real image of your plot, creating a photorealistic visualization. This not only allows you to quickly experiment with ideas but also to check their viability before any actual steps are taken on the plot.
FAQ
How realistic can the visualization be?
Visualization in formspace.design aims for maximum realism, using advanced AI algorithms to generate images. Of course, it's not always 100% photo-realism like in professional 3D studios, but the quality is sufficient to get a clear idea of the future appearance of the plot, materials, lighting, and overall mood. The goal is to give you an accurate understanding, not just a pretty picture.
Can the project be changed after visualization?
Yes, this is one of the key advantages of formspace.design. You can make changes to your project at any stage, adjusting zoning, adding or removing objects, changing materials or styles. The system allows you to quickly generate new visualizations taking into account the changes made, making the design process flexible and iterative.
Does formspace.design replace a landscape designer?
formspace.design is a powerful tool for plot owners and an assistant for designers, but it does not completely replace a human. It automates routine and technical tasks, speeds up the process of idea generation and visualization. However, experience, creative vision, knowledge of local conditions, and a deep understanding of client needs remain with the professional designer. formspace.design makes the designer's work more efficient and the process for the client clearer.
How long does it take to create a visualization?
With formspace.design, the process of creating a basic visualization can take from a few minutes to an hour, depending on the complexity of the plot and the level of detail you want to achieve. AI-generated concepts happen almost instantly, and refinement and obtaining realistic images are also significantly accelerated compared to traditional methods, which could take days or even weeks.
What if my plot has complex topography?
formspace.design allows you to work with photos and plans that reflect topographical features. While the system is not a full-fledged tool for engineering design of complex terraces or drainage systems, it allows you to visualize general concepts and the arrangement of elements on a plot with complex topography, providing a basis for further detailing. You can manually mark elevation changes or specify them in the description for the AI.
What data do I need to prepare to get started?
To start working, you will need a photograph of your plot from different angles or a schematic plan (e.g., a measurement plan, cadastral plan). The higher the quality of the source data, the more accurate and realistic the result will be. It is also useful to have an idea of your wishes: what zones you want to see, what style you prefer, what plants or materials you like.
What file formats does formspace.design support?
Currently, formspace.design is focused on working with raster images (photos in JPG, PNG formats) for the "Design from Photo" module and simple graphic schemes for the "Plan, Zones, Objects" module. In the future, support for additional formats is planned to ensure maximum flexibility for users and the ability to import data from other CAD systems for more advanced tasks.
