My Journey from Business Ideas to Code: How I Bridged the Gap

formspace.design founder Vladimir Vyborny shares his journey: how business expertise, combined with AI, empowers the creation of IT products, even without traditional coding skills.

I often hear the phrase: “I know exactly how my business should work, but I can't code it.” And I perfectly understand what they mean, because for most of my life I was precisely that businessman who explained on his fingers to programmers what he needed, only to receive something completely different in return. This gap between vision and implementation is one of the main pains of an entrepreneur, especially when automating and creating IT solutions. My path to formspace.design is a story of how I, a person without a technical education, at 61 years old, started coding with the help of AI to create a tool that my landscape business so desperately needed.

From Business Ideas to Disappointment in Implementation

My journey began in the 90s with NPF "Alkar," where, as deputy director, I was already setting tasks for programmers regarding management accounting. We created software for training, developed an advertising agency, published the newspaper "AlkarBusiness" — it was a world of constant search for new opportunities and their implementation. It was always clear to me how internal processes should work and how to optimize accounting. But translating these ideas into code always turned into difficulties and compromises.

The Problem of Formulations: 'I Understand, They Don't'

One of the main problems I faced for decades was translating my business requirements into a language understandable to programmers. I spoke about sales funnels, the specifics of plant care, and project budgeting, where each stage depends on weather conditions and material availability. Programmers, however, thought in terms of databases, algorithms, and interfaces. We spoke different languages, and the result was often something that only vaguely resembled my idea. This led to constant revisions, increased timelines and budgets, forcing me to settle for half-measures or use complex Excel spreadsheets.

Why Off-the-Shelf CRMs Couldn't Save the Landscape Business

I tried various off-the-shelf CRM systems, attempting to adapt them to the needs of "Dom i Sad" (Home and Garden). But the landscape business has its unique specifics that standard solutions simply don't account for. In landscaping, each project is unique, from 6 to 20+ acres, and requires detailed planning of zoning, plant selection, materials, and consideration of seasonality. Standard CRMs, focused on selling goods or services, could not effectively manage projects with stages of design, procurement, planting, and care, where each stage can last from several weeks to several months, and sometimes even years. Inventory accounting, specific reports on yield or plant survival rates, visualization – all of this was either impossible or required colossal modifications, losing its meaning. As I wrote in one of my articles, why a landscape company director needs management accounting, not bookkeeping, we needed a system that understood our industry.

AI as a Bridge: From Business Logic to Working Code

The turning point came when I started exploring the capabilities of artificial intelligence. At 61, without formal programming education, I saw AI not just as a tool for generating images, but as a powerful assistant in creating software code. My business experience, understanding of process logic, and clear functional requirements – all of this could now be directly “fed” to AI. I could describe the system in natural language, and AI would translate it into code. Of course, it wasn't magic, and it required skills in writing effective prompts, checking, and debugging, but for me, it was a real breakthrough. The gap between “I know how the business should work” and “I can't code it” began to rapidly shrink. Now I wasn't just explaining, I was creating what I needed. I described this process in detail in the article years when I explained to a programmer what I needed, and got something else.

Key Principles of Development Without a Team of Programmers

Developing formspace.design with AI taught me important principles useful for business automation without a development team:

  1. Clear Task Formulation: AI doesn't read minds. You need to describe the desired functionality, user steps, and expected results as thoroughly as possible. Imagine writing a detailed technical specification, but for AI.
  2. Iterative Approach: Don't try to create the entire system at once. Break the task down into small, manageable modules. Get a small piece of code – test it, refine it, move on to the next.
  3. Understanding the Basics: Although I'm not a programmer, a general understanding of how web technologies, databases, and APIs work simplifies interaction with AI and allows for faster debugging.
  4. Patience and Experimentation: Sometimes AI doesn't produce exactly what you expect. That's normal. Change prompts, ask clarifying questions, try different approaches. It's like communicating with a very smart, but sometimes inattentive assistant.
  5. Focus on Business Logic: My advantage as an entrepreneur is deep business knowledge. I focused on what needed to be done, and AI helped me with how.

How to Plan a Landscape in formspace.design

Now that I have created formspace.design, I can confidently say that this tool solves the very pains I faced for years. Imagine: you need to plan a 12-acre plot. Previously, this was a long process with drawings, calculations, and rework. In formspace.design, you can start with Module 1.1 "Plot Plan," where you can easily draw boundaries, mark existing structures and communications. Then move to Module 1.2 "Plot Zones" to define functional areas: a recreation area, a vegetable garden, a children's playground, a main entrance. You can visualize these zones, move them, change their sizes until you achieve the ideal balance.

Next, using Module 2.1 "AI Concept," you can upload a photo of your plot or part of it, and AI will suggest various stylistic solutions and ideas for landscaping and improvement. This significantly speeds up the conceptual design stage, offering fresh ideas you might not have considered. For example, for a 30 m² recreation area, AI might suggest options with a pergola, a barbecue area, and a small pond, considering the specified style. With formspace.design, you will not only get a visualization but also immediately generate a list of necessary objects and plants in Module 1.3 "Plot Objects." This allows you to estimate the scope of work, materials, and preliminary budget at the planning stage, avoiding errors where the project doesn't fit the budget or timeline.

FAQ

How does AI help if I can't code?

AI acts as your personal programmer-translator. You describe your business logic and desired functionality to it in plain language, and it generates the code. You don't need to know syntax or data structures perfectly; your task is to clearly articulate what you want and then verify the result.

Can I fully trust code created by AI?

Fully trusting code created by AI, like any other, should not be done without verification. AI is a powerful assistant, but it can make mistakes or generate suboptimal solutions. It's important to test the generated code, understand its logic, and be prepared for iterations and adjustments to ensure functionality and security.

What skills are needed for effective work with AI in development?

The main skill is the ability to clearly formulate tasks and break them down into smaller subtasks. It's also useful to have a basic understanding of web technologies and programming principles to more effectively debug and correct generated code. Patience and a willingness to experiment also play an important role.

How long does it take to create functionality with AI compared to traditional development?

This largely depends on the complexity of the task and your experience working with AI. In simple cases, creating functionality can take significantly less time than traditional development, as AI quickly generates draft code. For complex systems, the process still requires time for design, iterations, and debugging, but the overall development speed increases substantially.

What typical errors can be encountered when using AI for coding?

Typical errors include overly general or imprecise prompts, which lead to irrelevant code. AI can also generate code with logical errors, unoptimized code, or code that does not adhere to best security practices. It's important to carefully review and test all generated fragments.

Will AI replace programmers?

I believe that AI will not completely replace programmers, but it will change their role. AI will become a powerful tool that automates routine tasks and accelerates the development process. Programmers will be able to focus on more complex architectural solutions, optimization, security, and creative aspects, using AI as a kind of intelligent assistant.

Can formspace.design continue to evolve with AI?

Absolutely. The foundation of formspace.design is already laid using AI, and this allows me to quickly add new functionality and improve existing ones. I plan to develop modules for more detailed material accounting, integration with suppliers, and to improve intelligent suggestions for design and planning.

Bridging the gap between business ideas and their technical implementation is a challenge faced by many entrepreneurs. My journey to creating formspace.design shows that thanks to modern tools like artificial intelligence, this gap becomes surmountable. The main thing is a clear business vision, deep expertise in one's field, and a willingness to learn new things. I believe that every entrepreneur, armed with these qualities and the right tools, is capable of bringing their ideas to life, creating useful products.
