What Clients Most Often Request from AI Visualization — and What It Says About the Market

My experience shows clients want realism, speed, and multiple options from AI visualization. This shapes new demands in the landscape design market.

In my many years of practice as a landscape designer and, now, a developer at formspace.design, I constantly interact with people who want to transform their plots. With the advent and development of AI visualization tools, such as those I create, I've noticed how requests and expectations are changing. Clients want more than just a beautiful picture; they want a realistic, fast, and diverse representation of their future garden. This indicates that the market is striving for greater accessibility, flexibility, and clarity in planning, and those who understand this will be ahead.

Realism and Detail: From Dream to Image

The first and perhaps most important thing I hear from clients is: “I want to see how it will really look.” People are tired of schematic plans and abstract 3D models that don't convey the atmosphere. They want to see specific plants, their height and volume in a few years, the texture of paving, the play of light and shadow at different times of the day. On a plot of 10–15 ares, the detailing of every bush, every path becomes critical. AI visualization is indispensable here, as it allows transforming a general idea into a photorealistic image, blurring the line between project and reality.

Speed and Multivariance: “Show Me All Options”

Traditional landscape design is a lengthy process. From initial sketches to final renders, weeks, even months, can pass. Clients, however, want to make decisions quickly. They often don't know exactly what they want and need to see many options to choose “theirs.” AI tools provide this opportunity: instead of one or two options a designer might develop in a week, AI generates dozens of concepts in hours. This allows exploring various styles, zoning, plant compositions, and even materials, such as 1.2-meter wide gravel or cobblestone paths, without spending enormous time and budget.

Individualization: “Like Mine, But Better”

Despite the abundance of online references, every plot owner wants their garden to be unique. AI helps adapt general design solutions to the specifics of a particular location: considering slopes, existing mature trees, lighting features, or even the architecture of the house. This is not just copying others' ideas, but creatively reinterpreting them for specific conditions. Clients appreciate the ability to see how their chosen style “fits” their own plot, rather than an abstract model.

Economic Feasibility: “How Much Will It Cost?”

While AI doesn't directly calculate estimates yet, realistic visualization plays a key role in understanding the budget. When a client sees how a garden looks with expensive stone or exotic plants, they can make a more informed decision about the feasibility of such investments. Visualization helps assess the project's scale and avoid costly rework during the construction phase. As someone who has managed projects for a long time, I perfectly understand the importance of accurate accounting for materials and labor. I discussed my approach to this topic in more detail in the article What I Put Into the Project Cost Accounting Module for Planting Material.

Hidden Requests: More Than Just a Picture

Often, clients cannot articulate all their desires. They say: “I want it cozy” or “I need functionality.” AI visualization, by offering diverse options, helps uncover these hidden needs. For example, upon seeing a 30 m² relaxation area with a pergola and fire pit, a client might realize they need more than just a bench – a full-fledged space for gatherings with friends. Or, seeing a 50 m² children's playground with safe surfacing, they'll understand that this is exactly what they dreamed of for their children. AI becomes a tool for exploring one's own desires.

Typical Mistakes and Overestimated Expectations

Like any tool, AI requires the right approach. One of the most common client mistakes is trying to get a perfect result from overly general or imprecise input data. The “garbage in, garbage out” principle applies 100% here. If you upload low-quality photos or provide vague prompts, AI won't be able to read your mind and will produce irrelevant results. It's important to understand that AI is an assistant, not a magician, and the quality of your request determines the final visualization.

What This Says About the Landscape Design Market

These requests clearly show that the landscape design market is evolving. Clients are becoming more demanding, informed, and want to be actively involved in the design process. Professionals who can offer fast, realistic, and flexible visualization will have a significant advantage. AI does not replace the designer but makes their work more efficient and their ideas clearer and more accessible to the client. It also lowers the entry barrier for those who want to try their hand at designing their plot but lack specialized skills. For me, as someone who took up programming at 61, this became a new challenge and an opportunity to make design accessible to everyone, which I reflected on in the article What It Means to Be an Accidental CTO at 61.

How to Plan in formspace.design

At formspace.design, I integrated AI tools precisely with these needs in mind. Our platform allows plot owners and landscape professionals to quickly and effectively visualize their ideas.

Imagine you have a 12-are plot and want to rethink its backyard. You can start with Module 1.x (Plan/Zones/Objects) to outline the main functional areas: for example, a barbecue area (about 20 m²), a relaxation area with a hammock (15 m²), and a small pond. Then, by uploading a photo of your plot to Module 2.1 (AI Concept), you can experiment with different styles. For instance, enter a prompt: “modern landscape with a minimalist barbecue area, a decorative pond, and a flower bed of drought-resistant plants.” AI will generate 3–5 unique concepts that show how the selected elements will look on your plot. If you particularly like a concept, you can refine it in Module 3.1 (Design from Photo), clarifying details, changing paving textures, or adding specific plant types to get the most realistic image of your future garden. This allows you to not only see but also feel your future garden even before any work begins.

FAQ

Can AI completely replace a landscape designer?

No, AI is a powerful tool, but it cannot completely replace the human factor. AI accelerates the visualization process, offers new ideas, and automates routine tasks, but only an experienced designer possesses deep knowledge of dendrology, engineering, local conditions, and, most importantly, empathy for the client to understand their unspoken desires and bring them to life. The designer interprets, refines, and implements the project, using AI as an assistant.

How accurate are AI visualizations compared to reality?

Modern AI visualizations, especially those that use real photographs as a basis, strive for maximum photorealism. However, there will always be slight differences due to the variability of nature, material quality, and lighting conditions at different times. The goal of AI is to provide the most complete representation of the future project, but 100% identity with reality is not always achievable and is not an end in itself.

What data should be provided to AI for the best result?

The more information, the better the result. Be sure to provide high-quality photos of the plot from different angles, a site plan with dimensions, cardinal directions, and elevation changes. It's also helpful to describe your style preferences, favorite plants, desired functional zones (e.g., barbecue area, children's playground), and budget constraints. The more specific your request (prompt), the more accurate the visualization will be.

How does AI help save project budget?

AI helps save budget by minimizing the risks of errors and reworks. Thanks to the rapid generation of multiple options, you can “try on” various expensive solutions (e.g., specific types of paving or rare plants) before they are purchased and installed. This helps avoid costs for correcting unsuccessful design decisions and optimizes the selection of materials and plants, ultimately reducing overall project expenses.

Can I use AI if I have no design experience?

Yes, absolutely! Platforms like formspace.design are created precisely for such users. They democratize the design process, making it accessible and understandable for every plot owner. You don't need special skills or complex software to start experimenting with your garden, forming your vision, and finding inspiration.

What landscape styles are most often requested through AI?

In my experience, clients often request modern styles (minimalism, high-tech) for their clean lines and functionality, as well as natural or naturalistic styles, aiming for harmony with the environment. Classical and Mediterranean styles are also popular. Importantly, AI allows for easily mixing elements from different styles and adapting them to specific tastes and plot conditions.

What if AI generates irrelevant options?

If AI generates irrelevant or undesirable options, it's a signal to revise your request. Try to be more specific, add more details, specify limitations or exclusions. Sometimes, changing just one or two words in the prompt is enough to get a completely different result. This is a learning and interaction process with AI that requires some practice.

In conclusion, I am convinced that AI visualization is not just a new trend but a powerful tool that is changing approaches to landscape design. It makes the process more transparent, faster, and more accessible, opening new opportunities for both professionals and plot owners. I invite you to explore these possibilities with formspace.design and bring your boldest ideas to life.
