What AI in formspace.design can do now, and what's in development
Vladimir Vyborny, founder of formspace.design, shares current AI features in our planner, how they simplify landscape design, and what's coming next.
When I started coding with artificial intelligence at 61, my goal was clear: to create a tool I desperately needed during decades of work in landscape design. formspace.design is the embodiment of this idea, and AI plays a central role in it. Today, I want to tell you what our AI assistant can already do, how it helps plot owners, and what we plan to add in the near future.
The essence is that AI in formspace.design is already capable of significantly accelerating and simplifying the landscape planning process, offering ideas and solutions that previously required hours of a specialist's work. It's not a replacement for a designer, but a powerful assistant that makes a complex process accessible to everyone who wants to transform their plot.
My Journey to AI in Landscape: From Brush to Algorithms
My professional path began far from programming: I was passionate about painting, then taught physical education, and later moved into business, where I first encountered management accounting and setting tasks for programmers. Since 1997, I have been deeply immersed in the landscape industry, founding the company "Dom i Sad" (House and Garden). I designed, built, and taught. All these years, I sought ways to optimize the process, make it more visual, and less labor-intensive. I remember manually calculating project profitability, making many mistakes, and how much I lacked automation. I spoke about this experience in the article How I calculated project profitability manually and how many mistakes there were.
The turning point came when I started learning programming with the help of AI. This opened up completely new horizons for me. I realized that I could create a tool that would combine my experience as a landscape designer, entrepreneur, and artist with the capabilities of modern technology. This is how formspace.design was born, where AI is not just an addition, but the foundation for generating ideas and optimizing planning.
Current AI Capabilities in formspace.design
Currently, AI in formspace.design already boasts an impressive set of functions that genuinely help in plot planning:
- Concept Generation from Photos (Module 3.1 'Design by Photo'): You can upload a photo of your plot, and AI will suggest several landscape design options, considering existing elements, terrain, and lighting. This is an excellent starting point for inspiration and choosing an overall style.
- AI Concept (Module 2.1 'AI Concept'): This module allows you to generate design concepts based on a text description of your wishes. Do you want a "modern minimalist garden with a BBQ area and a small pond"? AI will offer options that you can refine.
- Assistance with Zoning and Object Placement (Modules 1.x 'Plan/Zones/Objects'): AI helps optimally place functional zones (recreation, playground, vegetable garden) and specific objects (gazebos, paths, water features). It can suggest the best places for plants, considering their sun and soil requirements, as well as the size of mature plants to avoid overcrowding the plot in a few years.
These functions already save hours of work, allowing you to quickly see how various ideas might look on your plot, say, from 10 to 20 ares. This is especially valuable for those without design experience who want to avoid mistakes that are difficult and expensive to correct later.
How AI Simplifies Routine and Helps Avoid Mistakes
One of the main tasks I set for myself when creating formspace.design was to free users from routine and help them avoid typical mistakes. In my practice, I often encountered projects that had to be redone due to incorrect calculations or poor visual representation. For example, incorrectly placed paths 60 cm wide instead of the necessary 90-120 cm for comfortable passage of two people, or recreation areas that turned out to be constantly in the shade.
AI in formspace.design allows you to:
- Visualize ideas in seconds: Instead of lengthy sketches and collages, you get realistic images where you can evaluate proportions, colors, and materials. This makes it possible to quickly iterate through options and find optimal solutions.
- Consider non-obvious factors: AI can suggest object placement considering sun movement, wind rose, and even seasonal changes. For example, it will help find the ideal spot for a terrace so that it is illuminated by the sun in the morning but protected from scorching rays in the afternoon.
- Assess scale: You can immediately see how, for example, a group of three mature thujas 3-4 meters high will look on your plot, and whether it will be too bulky or, conversely, unnoticeable.
This is not just time-saving; it's an opportunity to make more informed decisions, minimizing the risk of costly rework. As I wrote earlier, what AI can assemble itself, and what still requires a developer, AI is a tool, not a magician, but it significantly expands our capabilities.
What's in Active Development: A Look into the Future
My team (for now, it's just me, actively using AI for coding) is constantly working on expanding functionality. Our immediate plans include several ambitious tasks that will make formspace.design an even more powerful tool:
- Advanced Plant Selection Considering Climate and Care: We are working to enable AI to not just suggest beautiful plants, but also to consider their compatibility with your climate, soil type, and maintenance complexity. This will help create sustainable and easy-to-maintain gardens.
- Cost Estimation Integration: One of the most common problems in planning is exceeding the budget. We plan to add functions that will allow AI to make preliminary cost estimates for materials and work for the proposed concepts. This will enable users to immediately see the financial scope of their ideas.
- Detailed Lighting and Irrigation Planning: AI will be able to assist in developing lighting and automatic irrigation schemes, suggesting optimal placement of luminaires and irrigation systems for efficient and economical resource use.
- Deeper Adaptation to Terrain: Although AI already considers terrain, we are working on more complex algorithms that will allow for the creation of terraced gardens, cascades, and other complex landscape forms, considering slopes up to 15-20 degrees.
Limitations and the Importance of Human Expertise
Despite all its capabilities, it's important to understand that AI is a tool. It does not replace a human with their unique vision, sense of style, and deep understanding of specific plot conditions. AI excels at routine tasks, data analysis, and generating options, but the final decision, creative approach, and adaptation to unpredictable conditions always remain yours.
My experience shows that AI yields the best results when provided with quality input data and clear requests. It cannot "feel" the atmosphere you want to create or guess your favorite flowers unless you explicitly state them. Therefore, I always emphasize that how I correct AI when it doesn't understand a landscape task is also part of the process.
How to Plan Your Plot in formspace.design with AI
Let's consider a specific scenario of how you can use formspace.design to plan a plot of, for example, 15 ares, located on a slight slope and already having several mature trees that you want to preserve.
Start with Module 3.1 'Design by Photo'. Upload several high-quality photos of your plot from different angles. AI will analyze them, identify existing objects and terrain, and then propose several basic landscape concepts. These could be options in different styles – from classic to modern – each considering the location of your trees and the natural slope. After receiving the initial suggestions, you can choose the most appealing option or proceed to more detailed refinement.
Next, use Module 2.1 'AI Concept'. Here you can specify your particular preferences: for example, state that you need a large recreation area with a fire pit, a small vegetable garden on the sunny side, and natural stone paths. AI will generate new concepts that best match your requests. You can experiment with different styles and functional zones until you find the ideal solution. Then, move to Modules 1.x 'Plan/Zones/Objects', where you can manually refine the details: precisely place elements, select specific plant species from the library, and determine paving materials. This allows you to visualize and adjust the project before earthworks begin, avoiding costly mistakes and reworks that can cost tens of thousands of rubles.
FAQ
Will AI replace landscape designers?
No, AI will not replace landscape designers. It is a powerful tool that automates routine tasks, generates ideas and visualizations, but creative vision, deep understanding of context, client communication, and adaptation to unpredictable conditions remain the prerogative of humans. How accurate are AI solutions in formspace.design?
AI solutions in formspace.design provide high-quality concepts and visualizations that serve as an excellent starting point for planning. Accuracy depends on the quality of the input data (photos, descriptions) and your clarifications. AI considers many factors, but human adjustment and detailing are always required to ensure the project perfectly matches your unique needs and plot conditions.
Can I use my own photos of the plot?
Yes, absolutely. Module 3.1 'Design by Photo' is specifically designed for this. You can upload several photos of your plot, and AI will use them as a basis for generating design concepts. This allows you to receive the most relevant and realistic suggestions, adapted to your specific space and existing elements.
What data does AI need for the best results?
To achieve the best results, AI requires quality input data. This includes photos of the plot, its dimensions (e.g., 10-20 ares), information about existing buildings and trees, as well as your style preferences (modern, classic, natural), functional zones (recreation area, vegetable garden, playground), and desired elements (pond, gazebo, rock garden).
How quickly does AI generate ideas?
AI in formspace.design can generate design concepts very quickly – usually taking from a few seconds to several minutes, depending on the complexity of the request and the amount of data being processed. This allows users to quickly experiment with different ideas and receive instant feedback in the form of visualizations.
What if I don't like the AI's result?
If the initial AI result doesn't suit you, that's absolutely normal. You can easily change your requests, add new details, or choose a different style for AI to generate new options. The process in formspace.design is interactive: you can iteratively refine concepts until you find what you like, or manually adjust the suggested elements.
